I was about to enter the newsroom when Miss ____ “ambushed” me.
Miss: Cyril, ang taba mo na.
Cy: Nagpataba po talaga ako.
M: You like it?!
C: Yeah : )
I was surprised that she was, er, surprised. What’s wrong with gaining a few pounds? It’s not as if I’ve become obese. In fact, I am still six pounds underweight.
Besides, I put on weight because people, including Miss ____, had been telling me that I was too thin. I didn’t believe them until Bebi, who’s skinny, pointed out that while I’m about seven inches taller than her, my legs were thinner than hers.

May 2008
So I increased my food intake, resulting in a four-pound weight gain. My cheeks and arms became noticeably plumper (for some reason, my waist didn’t expand), and some people (impolitely) made sure that I knew. (Some weeks ago, an officemate said, “Ang taba taba na ni Cyril” in a sing-songy voice as I passed by. She didn’t even look up from her desk. Oh, the rudeness.)
I admit that the comments get to me sometimes, despite assurances from other people that I look better now than before. Whenever my confidence dips, I look at myself in the mirror and try to assess myself objectively.
I am neither too fat nor too thin. I am in the pink of health, and that’s what matters. =)
I got Sonja’s! *skippity-hops*
Matagal ko nang gustong makatikim ng Sonja’s cupcakes because of the good reviews, but I found the price, erm, prohibitive (P100 for one cupcake??).
Mabuti na lang charming ako, ahahaha. Salamat, Ginoong Paolo Iñigo! =)
Ang SARAAAAAP. Wala akong masabing profound kasi ang SARAAAAAP, hahaha. Like Irene, I actually felt happy while eating. Sulit (ang bayad ni Paolo ahehe) =)
Sa uulitin! =p

Here are portions of Raul C. Pangalangan’s column (“The clergy’s all-out war on contraceptives”) in today’s issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (emphases mine):
The Catholic Church’s hard-line position against contraception simply doesn’t make sense. Fine, the Church objects to abortion, but THE BILL DOES NOT LEGALIZE ABORTION IN ANY WAY and indeed affirms the criminal laws punishing abortion. Yet the opponents of the bill keep on calling the bill “pro-abortion….
In contrast, read Thursday’s report in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “The abortion rate in the United States has hit a 30-year low, with the decline particularly marked among teens, who once had the highest rate of abortion.” ABORTIONS WERE DRAMATICALLY REDUCED BY MORE THAN 50 PERCENT WITHIN 15 YEARS, DUE IN LARGE PART TO THE INCREASED USE OF CONTRACEPTIVES….
There are only two ways I can make sense of the clergy’s scorched-earth stance on this issue. The first is pure Church doctrine. As part of the lay public, I defer to the experts in dogma. I understand that some authoritative guy some time in the past said it was wrong. He’s got to be right. As proper faithful, we’ve got to toe the line. I leave them to their own internal wrangling, SO LONG AS THEY DON’T IMPOSE IT ON ALL OTHER FILIPINOS.
Rep. Raul del Mar of Cebu asked: Why should the government spend millions on contraceptives when these come from taxpayers’ money and these taxpayers are Catholic? The trouble, Congressman, is that you took an oath to uphold a Constitution that provides for the SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. Look all the way back to the Malolos Constitution, guys, and up to the present. We are a secular state, just in case you have forgotten….
Let us debate the real issues. I am sure the Filipino clergy will find enough supporters, myself included, in its campaign to reassert the primacy of ethical perspectives, but they will have to junk THEIR 15TH-CENTURY NOTION THAT SEX IS INHERENTLY EVIL AND IS JUSTIFIED ONLY IF IT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF REPRODUCTION. They must attune themselves to the modern sense that sex is a way by which couples express their deepest human feelings and by which the most meaningful human bonds are affirmed.
Click this to read the entire column.
The Catholic Church insists that sex is justified only if it is for the purpose of reproduction, yet it supports the natural family planning method, under which couples can have sex only during non-fertile days. Inconsistent, isn’t it?
Anyway, please click this to read the full text of the Reproductive Health Bill, and sign this petition if you support its immediate passage.
Mahalaga ito. Let us be involved.
I know, I know. I have been a delinquent blogger. I haven’t posted a socially relevant entry in…eons. I have been busy with schoolwork, but that is not a good-enough excuse. Knowledge gained must be spread!
There is so much that I want to share with you, but it would be impossible for me to impart all the information in one entry. So let me start small
* * *
Today my South Korean classmate Choice (That’s how she pronounces her name. I don’t know how to spell it, hehe.) and her husband Chong shared with our Feminist Theories and Movements class an award-winning documentary directed by their friend Kyungsoon in 2006.
“Shocking Family” criticizes the typical family’s tendency to disregard the individuality of its members. The film is also a critique of the way the family is being used to perpetuate patriarchy.
The latter was exemplified by the now-defunct South Korean “hoju” system, which dictated that every family should be headed by a man. If, for example, the father died and left behind his wife and six-year-old son, the little boy would automatically become the head of the family. If the couple did not have a son, the father’s death would be considered the end of that family.
Feminists who fought for the abolition of the system were opposed by men, mostly old ones, and even some women who believed that tradition should be upheld and that a man who did not head his own family was no better than a dog (their words, not mine).
The South Korean government abolished the system recently. Unfortunately, the macho mindset is much more difficult to eliminate.
As far as I know, the Philippines does not have a similar legally enshrined system, but this does not mean that patriarchy is absent among Filipino families.
During Catholic marriage rites, for example, the woman is told to be obedient to her husband. And at the end of the ceremony, the priest often says, “I now pronounce you MAN and WIFE,” as if marriage automatically dissolves the identity of the woman and limits her life role to that of a wife and, eventually, a mother.
And don’t parents usually tell their daughters to find a man who can provide for them (“yung kaya kang buhayin”), as if their female children do not have the ability to fend for themselves?
While society expects men to provide for the family financially, it expects women to do the household chores and care for their husband and children. A woman who refuses to abandon her career to be a kitchen slave and soccer mom is considered by society in general to be a bad wife and mother. This is also why the shortcomings of children are often blamed on the mother. “Adik yan kasi pinabayaan ng Nanay.” But what about the father? Isn’t it only fair for parents to share the responsibilities at home?
There are still a lot of issues that need to be discussed (economic power of men, gay parents, etc.), but let me save those for future entries.
I now end this post with a brief etymology lesson:
The word “family” came from “familus,” an ancient Roman term for slave. From this word came “familia,” which denoted a social organism comprised of a male head and his wife, children and slaves, over whom he had the power of life and death (meaning he could have them killed with impunity, if he wished to).
The said social organism existed in ANCIENT Rome. Has much changed, since?

I promise to try to blog more often (Twitter updates do not count). Finals period would definitely make that difficult, but I will TRY.

Kani-kanina lang, may unknown number na tumawag sa cellphone ko. I accepted the call kasi akala ko tumatawag yung i-interview-hin ko bukas to confirm kung tuloy kami.
Cy: Hello.

Cy: Hello?… Hello?… Hello!
Weirdo: Puwedeng makipagkilala?
I know the polite thing to do is reject the person courteously, pero base sa aking karanasan, mas mainam ang man-deadma dahil lalo silang nangungulit kapag polite ka. So I ended the call.
Aba tumawag uli.
*rejects*
At tumawag pa uli.
