my tita, my mother

We all grew up hearing stories about pretty orphans forced into slavery by evil stepmothers. So when some relatives learned that Papa was going to remarry, they were worried about my siblings and me.

I wasn’t. I was confident that Papa would never marry someone who would hurt us. And I was right, for Tita Tes turned out to be a wonderful, loving stepmom.

Sure, the first few years were rough. There were tampuhans and disagreements, but I never questioned Tita Tes’ right to berate us or impose rules on us. We never had the melodramatic “Bakit, Nanay ba kita?” confrontation because I knew that whatever Tita Tes did, she did out of love for us.

She left her career as a chemical engineer to take care of us, especially Alvin, who was only nine when Mama passed away. Kahit ngayong mas malaki na kami sa kanya, tuloy pa rin ang alaga niya. Just yesterday pinaghimay niya ako ng crab meat kasi hindi pa rin ako marunong, hehe.

Hindi tumitigil si Tita Tes sa pisikal na pag-asikaso. My siblings and I can run to her whenever we have problems. Nauuna pa nga siyang umiyak sa amin kapag heartbroken kami.

Now that Tita Jen is gone and her husband Tito Greg is set to return to Dubai for work, madadagdagan ng apat ang mga alaga ni Tita Tes.

I feel for Tita Jen’s children, nanggaling ako dun e. But I’m not worried about their well-being because I know they’re in good, loving hands.

I used to tell myself that no matter how much I loved her, I would not consider Tita Tes my mother because there could only be one Mama. But now, even though I still call her Tita Tes, I think of her as one of my two wonderful mothers.

I am thankful that I have both of them in my life. (Yes, HAVE.)
