coming home

I have been avoiding churches for months. While I believe in God, I dislike the idea of religiously visiting buildings with large banners screaming “No to RH Bill!”, and of spending my Sunday mornings being told that I am a terrible person who must change ASAP to be able to enter heaven. (I think it’s akin to bribery, dangling the promise of heaven and the approval of God Almighty just to get people to be good. I hold in higher esteem atheists who do not believe in the afterlife but who do good deeds anyway.)

But there is one church that is close to my heart. When I was an undergraduate student at UP Diliman, one of my tambayans was the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice. I would just sit there and talk to God like we were BFFs. Doing that always made me feel light and happy.

The church became more significant to me in 2004, when it became witness to the official start of my first romantic relationship.

Four years later, I mourned the death of that relationship on the same spot, on the exact same bench, where it was born.

Almost a month after ending another relationship, I found myself going back to the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice. Pagpasok pa lang sa garden, kinailangan nang mag-stifle ng hikbi. At pagkatapak na pagkatapak sa simbahan, tumulo na ang luha.  I felt like a girl running into her mother’s arms after a terrible day at school.

Pero hindi ko makuhang maghain ng mga hinaing ko sa buhay sa loob ng simbahang iyon. I knew that I had no right to complain, that I shouldn’t waste God’s time with my pity party when there were millions of people out there with actual problems. So I just said sorry. Sorry for being so self-absorbed. For failing to acknowledge the many blessings in front of me. For deeply hurting someone who never did me wrong.

I left the church feeling at peace, something that has eluded me for months. Talking to God did not solve all my problems, nor did it magically extinguish my sadness. But I found peace in God’s silent assurance that things would be better.

I may not be religious, but I have faith.
